Design Concept

Brut Cake is a creative concept manifested in products, art and most importantly, life.

Brut refers to the Art Brut movement originating in France, and is an apt description of the raw, original and essential elements of Brut Cake products. Cake evokes images of the simple pleasures and happiness in life.

We take the concept of Art Brut from a position of pure artistic ambition to one of functional creation. However, Brut Cake doesn’t see itself as an industrial design shop; instead, we devote ourselves to handcrafted, useful and functional objects of art. 

Such is our belief in the longevity and beauty of raw materials; we also see treasure where others see only waste. Combining elements from discarded furniture and the like, we re-imagine them into new functional pieces, bringing a new life and aesthetic to these recycled gems

About Brut Cake’s Founder & Designer – Nicole Teng

Nicole Teng began her career in advertising in Taiwan, but in 2007 moved to Shanghai, where she soon discovered her true path. Transitioning from advertising to working as a gallery curator, she eventually found her own creative voice—collecting recycled materials and reimagining them into something fresh, beautiful, and meaningful.

Known for her boundless creativity, Nicole has a gift for finding inspiration in the details of everyday life. What started with transforming broken furniture and forgotten fabrics grew into Brut Cake—a brand rooted in the belief that materials and craftsmanship still have so much life to give. From handwoven fabrics made into bags, to restored furniture, to pottery shaped on the wheel, Nicole’s creations are always handmade and filled with the spirit of the “Maker.”

Brut Cake is more than design—it’s about treasuring good materials, celebrating craftsmanship, and giving them new life through fresh ideas. Nicole’s mission is simple yet powerful: to bring people a little smile and a moment of delight in their everyday lives.
